A Rome City Police motorcycle officer was transported to the hospital with minor injuries after his motorcycle collided with an SUV in front of Walmart on Redmond Circle Tuesday morning.

According to Sgt. Eric Tallent with the Georgia State Patrol, a red Jeep Grand Cherokee was pulling out of the parking lot at Walmart, stopped at the stop sign. The Rome Police motorcycle unit was traveling south on Redmond Circle. The Jeep pulled out in front of the patrol bike. The officer tried to avoid the collision but was unable to.

Sgt. Tallent said it was a very low-speed collision and officer was up and walking around when he arrived on the scene. Sgt. Tallent reminded motorists to always be aware of the presence of motorcycles on the road.

“Look twice, you know that’s the motto,” he said. “Motorcycle can be hard to see sometimes so we ask everyone to pay attention and make sure it’s clear before pulling out.”

The driver of the Jeep was cited for failure to yield after stopping at a stop sign.

The Rome City Police Department posted a picture of Officer David McGuire this morning with the following caption:

“We would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers for our officer involved in the motorcycle wreck this morning! Officer McGuire is doing well and is expected to make a full recovery!”
