A Floyd County police officer returned to work this week after a state investigation, firearms discharge review panel and the district attorney all stated he acted according to procedure in the shooting death of a Floyd County man.

The incident occurred Dec. 26 at 12:27 a.m. when officer Shane Scoggins shot and killed 55-year-old Paul Bennett Hoyle on Floyd Springs Road after Hoyle took the officer’s Taser in a struggle.

Scoggins, who returned to work as a patrol officer on Wednesday, said he feels good about being back on the street.

“It’s where I’m most comfortable, you know. I feel good being out here, and I’m glad to be helping the public,” he said. “That’s why I got into it, and I enjoy it.”
