Family preparedness is the theme during the first day of Severe Weather Awareness Week today, a joint effort between the National Weather Service, the Georgia Emergency Management Agency and local emergency officials.

Each day this week, national, state and local authorities will post information about different weather topics, in hopes that citizens will take time during periods of calm weather like today to prepare for more serious events that are certain to occur in the future.

Every family should develop an emergency plan for severe weather.  Also, it is smart to plan ahead for severe weather by having bottled water and emergency supplies of food on hand in case utilities go out during a severe weather situation.
