A small earthquake struck near Ft Payne during the pre-dawn hours of Monday. 

According to the United States Geological Survey, that quake hit about five miles east of the city, registering a 1.4 on the Richter Scale – making it the smallest of 11 earthquakes registered in Alabama so far this year.

The largest earthquake in Alabama`s recent history was back in 2003, when an earthquake shook DeKalb County on April 29th – that quake was a 4.9 magnitude, and could be felt in several nearby states, as far away as Indiana.
