The Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s crime lab in Summerville is scheduled to close next month. To save money the GBI is eliminating three of its seven labs in Moultrie, Summerville, and Columbus. Evidence will be driven to labs in Atlanta or Macon. That trip could take an officer two hours.
State Representative Barbara Massey Reece recently told AM 1180 that she is working to find a way to keep the crime lab in Chattooga County, but due to budget issues that scenerio is not likely. With the state strapped for cash the crime labs are being closed and workers are being shuffled, while some are taking retirement.
