A quick glance at the numbers for the proposed millage rate increase can be confusing to many, even those who deal with the numbers every day.
Chattooga County Commissioner Jason Winters told AM 1180 that while he was forced to advertise a increase of over 23.01% in the official press release announcing the millage rate hike due to the way the state requires calculations to be done, but that doesn’t mean that Chattooga County tax payers will be seeing a 23% jump over last year’s tax bill.
The number that was advertised is calculated based on previous year’s numbers and also includes "roll backs" and other terms most tax payers are not familiar with. In actuallity the property tax will be going up around 12% over what tax-payers paid on last year’s tax bill.
Commissioner Winters has scheduled three public meetings to accept questions from the public about the millage rate increase on:
Friday – August 6, 2010 at 6 PM
Monday – August 16, 2010 at 10 AM
Monday – August 16, 2010 at 2 PM
