The Trion Town Council voted last week not to apply for a CDGB Block Grant for water line improvements in the town. Councilman Johnny Simmons said that since the area applying for the grant would not be more than 70% low to moderate income, he felt it was not in the town’s best interest to apply for the grant.
In fact, Julie Meadows with the Northwest Georgia Regional Commission said that threshold was low and that most areas that get approved have a low to moderate income level of 90% or more. Councilman Simmons also asked Mayor Ingles about the cost for applying for the grant. Ms. Meadows said that there is now a $1800 fee to apply for the CDGB Grant. The council agreed that it was not in the best interest of the town to spend the money on the grant application at this time.
