Saturday night at the Trion High School gym, the Lady Bulldogs locked up with the Lady Chargers of Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy in the opening round of the Class A state basketball playoffs. The teams seemed very evenly matched early on, and the score showed it as the visiting Lady Chargers took a two-point lead into the half-time locker room, 25 – 23. However, Trion’s ladies turned up the heat defensively in the second half, holding a usually potent Eagle’s Landing offense to only twelve points in the second half.
Guards Alexis Howell, Ashley Lee, Samantha Brown, and Carrie Ann Caron took turns blanketing the Lady Chargers star scorer, Emily Jacobs all evening. Even though Jacobs connected for 18 points, she missed crucial shots down the stretch, never getting a clear look at he basket without a Lady Bulldog with a hand up. Courtney Stowe and Morgan Blanchard dominated the paint, grabbing big rebounds down the stretch. Carrie Ann Caron added a three-point threat, and Alex James hit a clutch shot late when the Lady Chargers were trying to fight their way back in the game.
When the final buzzer sounded, the Lady Bulldogs had moved on to the next round with their 46- 37 victory. Trion’s next game will be Wednesday, March 3rd, at Southwest Atlanta Christian.
