Georgia’s most promising future superintendents are supported by the GSGF, through the James B. "Monty" Moncrief Memorial Scholarship Program. The Moncrief Scholarships honor deserving students in the field of agronomy and turf management at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC) and the University of Georgia (UGA). The scholarship is named in memory of Moncrief, a former Southeastern Green Section Director for the United States Golf Association. This program is also supported by the Georgia Golf Environmental Foundation, the charitable affiliate of the Georgia Golf Course Superintendents Association.
Students are nominated by their faculty advisors and selected based on academic achievement, character and financial need. The application process includes an interview by a panel that includes representatives from the GSGF and the Georgia Golf Course Superintendents Association.
The program is in its 33rd year and has granted more than $300,000 to more than 240 Moncrief Scholars during that time. Eight students from ABAC and four from UGA received scholarships for the 2009-10 school year.
Eric Simpson of Trion and Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College is a renewing recipient of a Moncrief Scholarship given by the Georgia State Golf Association for potential golf course superintendents studying agronomy and turf management.
