A COUPLE OF AREA COUNTIES HAD A CLEAR DROP IN NEW CLAIMS FOR UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS IN JANUARY.  WALKER COUNTY’S NEW CLAIMS DROPPED FROM 1,078 IN DECEMBER, TO 827 IN JANUARY… THAT’S DOWN 23 PERCENT.

CHATTOOGA COUNTY ALSO DROPPED ABOUT 23 PERCENT OVER THE MONTH… WITH JANUARY NEW CLAIMS AT 142.  BUT IT WAS BREAK-EVEN FOR CATOOSA AND WHITFIELD COUNTIES.  THERE WAS NO APPRECIABLE CHANGE IN INITIAL UNEMPLOYMENT CLAIMS IN THE LATEST FIGURES.  CATOOSA WAS DOWN BY ONE… WHITFIELD WAS UP BY EIGHT.

IT DOES APPEAR THAT JOB LOSSES ARE SLOWING IN GEORGIA, WITH INITIAL CLAIMS DROPPING 5.6 PERCENT FROM DECEMBER TO JANUARY.
