Veterans Day was celebrated this week on Friday and in Chattooga County activities have continued throughout the weekend.  Earlier in the week Commissioner Jason Winters signed a proclamation honoring Chattooga County’s Veterans. On Friday Menlo School held its annual Veterans Day program and Summerville Elementary School held a reception for veterans at the school.

Saturday there were two events to honor veterans in our community.  The first was held at Veterans Park located at Dowdy Park in Summerville.  Retired USMC Colonel Jimmy Lenderman spoke at the ceremony.  Mr. Lenderman, who is Chattooga County’s School Superintendent, also spoke at the ceremony in Trion on Saturday afternoon.  Chattooga County Probate Judge Jon Payne also spoke at the Trion ceremony.  Judge Payne told AM 1180 that he was honored to speak at the event, something he has been doing for many years.

Today, Sardis Baptist Church in Chattoogaville is having a special service to honor veterans.  Boy Scout Troop Number Seven from Summerville will be participating in a flag ceremony at the church and a flag will be presented to the oldest veteran at the service today.
