Residents on Lookout Mountain in the High Church area will have to drive several extra miles to vote in the next election. The High Community is in Southern Walker County just above the Chattooga County line. In previous years the community, most of whom have Cloudland addresses, have voted at the Daughtery Gap Fire Hall located just below Camp Adahi. Before that the voters voted at High Church. Those residents will now have to drive around 15 miles up the mountain to Mount Pleasant Community Center located above the intersection of Highway 136 and Highway 157.
The move is an effort by Walker County to cut down on the number of the precincts, presumably to save money. The changes were approved by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Secretary of State’s Office in Atlanta.
Also, residents of the West Armuchee Community in Walker County just north of the Chattooga County line on the east side of the county are being combined into one voting precinct with East Armuchee. Those voters will now vote at the East Armuchee Fire Hall.
