Warden Dennis Brown was appointed as Acting Warden of Hays State
Prison in Trion, Georgia on October 17, 2008. Prior to assuming this position, he
has been serving as the Warden of Scott State Prison, a 1500-bed medium
security prison in Milledgeville, Georgia. Commissioner James E. Donald
describes Warden Brown as the “consummate professional who has a strong
background in security. He is absolutely the right man for this challenging
leadership position.”
Warden Brown has an extensive background in command and staff
positions in the Georgia Department of Corrections. Prior to becoming appointed
Warden at Scott State Prison in 2007, he served as the Deputy Warden of
Security at Augusta State Medical Prison in Augusta, Georgia for eight years,
beginning in 1999.
Warden Brown is from Sparta, Georgia and has been a career Corrections
employee since 1981. He has served in numerous positions, beginning with
Correctional Officer at Scott State Prison. In 1991 he was promoted to
Correctional Sergeant at Hancock State Prison, then continued to rise through
the ranks as Lieutenant, and ultimately Chief of Security in 1996.
He is a 1979 graduate of Fort Valley State College, and has successfully
completed many of the Department’s professional development courses,
including the Commissioner’s Pre-Command Class, Professional Management
Training, and Supervisory Development. He is also a graduate of the
Correctional Leadership Institute, and a member of the Georgia Prison Wardens’
Association.
Warden Brown is married with one son and one grandson, and utilizes his
personal time in church-related activities.
