The Lyerly Town Council voted on Tuesday evening to enter into an agreement with the City of Summerville that will allow the town to participate in providing water to the Mohawk plant in Lyerly. The two municipalities were at odds for some time over the application of a grant by the City of Summerville to run a new water line to the Mohawk facility. On Tuesday evening in a special called meeting of the Lyerly Town Council, Lyerly voted to assist in the cost of infrastructure improvements and purchase the water from Summerville then sell it to Mohawk.
The infrastructure improvements will cost the Town of Lyerly over $117,000 according to grant estimations. When asked where the town would get the extra money, Lyerly Mayor Jessica Eller stated that the money would have to be obtained by "cutting where we can." The idea was also floated that the town might get the money by obtaining a line of credit loan against SPLOST funds.
For now, there are details to be worked out. First, where will the extra $117,000 plus come from? Second, it has yet to be determined how much Lyerly will be paying for water from the City of Summerville to provide to Mohawk. These and other questions will have to be worked out between the two municipalities.
