Thirteen individuals lost their lives on Georgia roadways during the 78-hour Independence Day holiday travel period, which concluded Sunday, July 6, 2025. Preliminary statistics released by the Georgia State Patrol (GSP) and local law enforcement agencies reveal a somber toll across the state.
The holiday travel period commenced at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 3, and concluded at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, July 6. Of the 13 fatal traffic crashes investigated statewide, Georgia State Patrol Troopers handled eight, while local law enforcement agencies investigated an additional five. Agencies reporting fatal incidents included the Burke County Sheriff’s Office, Hall County Sheriff’s Office, Jones County Sheriff’s Office, and the South Fulton Police Department.
Beyond the tragic deaths, GSP Troopers investigated more than 275 traffic crashes across Georgia, resulting in nearly 135 injuries.
In a concerted effort to ensure road safety, GSP Troopers and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement (CVE) Officers conducted over 20,970 traffic stops throughout the extended holiday weekend. These enforcement actions led to more than 490 arrests for driving under the influence (DUI). Additionally, officers issued over 14,710 warnings and 11,665 citations for various traffic infractions.
Enforcement efforts specifically targeted dangerous driving behaviors. Troopers and CVE Officers issued over 790 citations for distracted driving, nearly 1,335 for seatbelt violations, and more than 250 for child restraint violations.
Authorities emphasize that these crash statistics are preliminary findings and may be subject to change as investigations are finalized following the holiday travel period.
