Floyd Doctor Plans Trip to Haiti

Dr. Melvin Thomas, an associate director of the Floyd Family Medicine Residency Program, will lead a medical mission trip to Haiti beginning Jan. 30 and has an opportunity for others to participate.

Thomas has led several such trips to Haiti and the Dominican Republic over the past several years and has developed a relationship with missionaries and community leaders, particularly in the town of Ouanaminthe in Haiti’s northeast corner near its border with the Dominican Republic.

On each visit, Thomas seeks donations from pharmaceutical companies to stock clinic pharmacies, particularly with prescriptions to treat hypertension.

An equally pressing need is nutritional supplements for a poor population.

“We need vitamins for mothers, infants, children and adults as well as pre-natal vitamins,” Thomas said.

Individuals interested in contributing vitamins may contact Thomas at 706-509-3300 or by sending him an email to mthomas@floyd.org.
