Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader is warning area residents about an online scam that is attempting to get personal information.

The sheriff posted the following on social media on Friday:

If you receive this notice Please do not put in any personal information. This appears to be a scam:

Several media outlets across the nation have reported on this scam and say that if you click the link and attempt to sign up for the fictional “bonus stimulus” the scammers will ask for a copy of your driver’s license and then for your social security number – which is all the information they need to steal your money.

The U.S. Treasury Department says about these types of scams, “If you receive calls, emails, or other communications claiming to be from the Treasury Department and offering COVID-19 related grants or stimulus payments in exchange for personal financial information, or an advance fee, or charge of any kind, including the purchase of gift cards, please do not respond.  These are scams.  Please contact the FBI at www.ic3.gov so that the scammers can be tracked and stopped.”
