If you are like a lot of folks in Chattooga County and Northwest Georgia, one of the closest good fishing spots for you is in neighboring Cherokee County at Weiss Lake.  But if you regularly catch and consume fish from Weiss Lake, you may want to know about the 2021 Alabama Fish Consumption Advisory that was recently issued.

The advisory is put out every year to let fishermen know about the safe number of meals of a species of fish that can be eaten in a given period of time, such as meals per week, meals per month or do not eat any.   When excess levels of a contaminant are found in a specific species of fish, an advisory is issued for that specific species.

The advisory is put out by various state agencies in Alabama and covers specific bodies of water and their tributaries such as the Chattooga River at the state line.
