There was some stiff competition for the companies that had submitted applications to get a license from the State of Georgia to produce low-THC cannabis.  Over the past weekend the Georgia Cannabis Commission was tasked with awarding six licenses out of sixty-nine companies that submitted applications.

Remedium Life Science of Georgia had hoped to be one of the companies chosen by the commission, but the company didn’t make the cut.  Remedium had planned to build a manufacturing facility in the Trion Industrial Park and was expected to create a good number of jobs in Chattooga County, if they had received a license.

Two years ago, the Georgia General Assembly passed House Bill 324, “Georgia’s Hope Act,” which allows patients to access medical cannabis oil with no more than 5% THC.  Two licensees will allocate up to 100,000 square feet of growing space, while four licensees will be limited to no more than 50,000 square feet of growing space.

There is talk among Georgia law makers about revisiting the 2019 law and expanding the number of manufacturers.  The topic is expected to come up during the 2022 General Assembly legislative session.
