The last couple of years have been full of uncertainty for the oldest and longest-running cotton mill in the United States.  Mount Vernon Mills in Trion has been in continuous production since 1845, but the mill has gone through some major changes recently.

Word came in early 2020 that Mount Vernon was closing their mill in Mt. Alto, Georgia and sent rumors throughout the mill here in Chattooga County.  Then, company officials announced that the carding and spinning departments at the mill in Trion would cease production.  Mount Vernon said that it was more cost effective to purchase cotton that had already gone through the carding and spinning process than to make it themselves.

Then cam the COVID-19 pandemic.  Local media was full of reports about the mill being behind on payments to the Town of Trion and many people were worried about the future of the 176 year-old mill.

But now, things are improving.  Just last week, ABL Advisor released an article detailing how Mount Vernon officials hired the services of cash-flow, debt-management professionals Carl Marks Advisors.  The company assisted Mount Vernon in restructuring debt.

The article (Read it here ) says, “Carl Marks Advisors aided in business unit evaluation, marketing to potential buyers, and the creation of a new business plan for 2021 and beyond, which was integral to securing a new credit facility. Because of this healthier positioning, the company was able to find suitable lenders and secure for themselves a stronger credit vehicle to fuel continued growth.”

Just last week, the mill announced an across-the-board pay increase for hourly and salaried employees.

Mount Vernon is currently hiring.  If you are interested in a job, you can apply in-person at the Human Resources Department at the mill in Trion.
