It is Day Three of the Chattooga County Agricultural Fair and Saturday’s activities mean plenty to see and do for fair goers. 

There will be two different livestock events at the Fair Pavilion today, starting with the JR. Beef Show at 1 PM.  Then, later this evening one of the fair-favorites, the Poultry Show and Auction.  Each year Chattooga County 4-H and FFA Students receive baby chicks in the spring.  They raise the hens to laying-size and bring them for judging at the fair.   After the judging, the birds are auctioned to the highest bidder – and the students get to keep all of the proceeds.  The poultry show and auction starts at 6:30 PM this evening.  After the poultry show, there will be an auction for a beautiful cedar wood-carved bench and mantel.

In addition to the livestock shows, there will be plenty to see and do inside the Ag Building.  You can stop by the Chattooga County Historical Society’s “The Way We Were” room and see historical photos from Chattooga County’s past.  Plus you can see all of the prize-winning entries in the fair’s Blue Ribbon Department.  In addition, you can also catch some of the demonstrations going on that are sponsored by the Chattooga County Farm Bureau:

• 2:30pm – Kathy Berry – Kathy’s Kane Patch – Chair seat weaving demonstration – Chair caning, or weaving, dates to the early days of China when these types of seats were reserved for the affluent, and the wooden seats were for commoners. Today, this nearly lost art can mainly be found on heirloom chairs and rockers. Ms. Berry will demonstrate the techniques that create and help restore these cherished pieces.
• 4:00pm – Rose Kohler – Book Art Basics – Recycle those old books into gifts and works of art.  Start simple and work your way up to intricate designs.  Come learn the basics of book art!
• 5:30pm – Brenda Park – Quilts of Valor – Basics of quilt making – Do you know how to jelly roll and make cake layers?  Learn the basics of creating a quilt block from start to finish with the Quilts of Valor team.  View their beautiful creations in the AG Center.
• 7:00pm – Gwen Fisher- Master Gardener Extension Volunteer – Easy medicinal salves you can make at home! Insect bites, burns, and cracked elbows can all be treated with salves that you can make yourself. Mrs. Fisher will share these simple salves and how you can make your own right at home!

Of course the midway rides are always a favorite, and tonight ride armbands will be $25.  In addition to the traditional carnival rides, you can take a ride in a helicopter at the fair.  The helicopter takes you up for a panoramic view of the Chattooga County Fairgrounds and you see the surrounding beauty of Chattooga County from Taylor’s Ridge to Lookout Mountain.  The cost is $20 per person for the helicopter rides.

Don’t forget about entertainment.  Tonight on the Smith Iron Works Stage, Small Town Rumor will be presenting an tribute to The Eagles at 7 PM and Babes Bayou will take the stage at 9 PM.  The entertainment is included with your $5 gate admission to the fair.
