Today is the 127th Labor Day that has been celebrated in the United States.  The day has been a Federal Holiday since 1894, when Grover Cleveland was President.

The idea stemmed from the Industrial Revolution and harsh labor practices.  The day was set aside to honor the contributions of average workers in the United States.  In modern times, the day has become the unofficial “last day of summer” for many people, even though technically summer doesn’t end until later this month – on September 22nd.

Most governmental offices will be closed today, including all four municipalities in Chattooga County along with state, county and Federal offices.  The Post Office will be closed today and banks will be closed as well.

Both the Town of Trion and The City of Summerville posted notices last week about their Labor Day Closings.  Anyone with any emergencies today should call Chattooga 911.
