A GBI autopsy is pending in the death of a seven-month-old Chattooga County girl who died Thursday at Floyd Medical Center.
Hometown Headlines reported on Friday that the child was diagnosed with COVID about two weeks ago. Chattooga County Coroner Earl Rainwater confirms COVID is being investigated as a potential cause of death but added that will be determined by the GBI autopsy.
If confirmed, the child would be among the state’s youngest COVID victims since March 2020 and the youngest from Northwest Georgia.
The report comes less than a week after a healthy, twenty-four-year-old assistant basketbal coach at Shorter University died after a 24-hour battle with the virus.
Also on Aug. 31, a 13-year-old Coosa High eighth-grader died from COVID causes.
