The proponents for legalized gambling in Georgia are facing some opposition from the state’s largest Christian denomination.
The Georgia Baptist Convention represents 1.4 million Georgians in over 3,600 churches throughout the state. Leaders of the convention say that they are prepared the organized gambling lobby that is pushing state lawmakers to legalize casino gambling.
The fight is likely to pit the conservative religious organization against some conservative Republican lawmakers who have show a willingness to consider legalized gambling in the state.
All past attempts to legalize casino gambling in Georgia have failed but Georgia Baptists are urging their church members to let their governor and lawmakers know not only that they’re opposed to casinos but also that they’ll be holding them accountable at the polls if they don’t toe the line.
