Summerville native Judy Gilreath finished her final week as school superintendent of the Whitfield County School System this week, after announcing her retirement back in June.
Gilreath told the Dalton Daily Citizen that she “grew up poor” in Chattooga County and worked three jobs to obtain her degree from Jacksonville State University in Alabama before launching a career as an educator. Her first degree was in “home economics” which is now known as consumer sciences. Gilreath’s first teaching job was at Summerville Middle School and then she taught at Chattooga High School.
Gilreath also taught in the Walker County School system before making the move to the Whitfield County School system where she eventually became assistant principal at an elementary school.
Gilreath said, “”I think I’ve been able to make a difference” in leadership positions, from assistant principal and then principal at Pleasant Grove Elementary, to assistant superintendent and superintendent of Whitfield County Schools.”
