A phone call with a promise to wipe out your debt might seem like an answer to prayer,  but scammers are taking advantage of your economic fear to steal your money.

Last week, a Menlo woman reported to the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office that she had received a phone call from a company offering to eliminate her debt – but first, she had to give them her credit card and personal information.

Of course, the call was coming from a scammer and since that time the woman said her credit card was being used without her permission.  The woman told a responding deputy that she was taking steps to dispute the credit card claims and needed a police report for the process.
