View from a Georgia DOT Truck on Lookout Mountain on Sunday

While much of the valley saw little to no snow in our listening area, it was a different world on top of Lookout Mountain on Sunday morning.  The snow began early on Sunday and it continued snowing most of the day, but state highways on the mountain were passable all day and into Monday morning.

Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader told WZQZ News on Sunday morning that the state had done a good job of keeping Highway 48 and Highway 157 in Chattooga County in good condition.  That wasn’t the case on Highway 117 in Mentone, where the state of Alabama had to shut down the highway due to the snow.

Joe Schulman, communications director for the Georgia Department of Transportation Northwest Region told WZQZ News on Saturday that state crews had been out since Friday morning treating Highway 27 at Taylor’s Ridge and the state highways on Lookout Mountain in preparation for the winter weather.

On Monday morning, Schulman told WZQZ that the only state road in all of North Georgia that had to be closed was State Route 2 on Fort Mountain in Northeast Georgia.  Schulman said that the early preparation allowed the state road crews to keep road conditions in check.

Now, all eyes are on the possibility of more winter weather moving into the area on Thursday and Friday this week.  Forecasters say it is too early to tell if we will see anything from the weather system.
