State Senator Jeff Mullis (R-Chickamauga) is taking aim at the organization that oversees high school sports for many public and private schools in Georgia.  In an interview with public radio station WABE, Mullis said the Georgia High School Athletic (GHSA) organization was “out of control.”

The GHSA is a nonprofit organization that has participation from over 460 public and private schools.  The organization funds itself by tournament fees, competitions and playoffs.  They also take corporate sponsorship and collect money from local radio and television stations for broadcast rights to playoff games.

Mullis has introduced legislation that would create another organization to oversee high school sports because he feels the GHSA doesn’t treat small, mostly rural, schools fairly.  Mullis told the public radio station in Atlanta, “We’re trying to get them to understand that their goal should be to make sure high school systems are treated fairly. With their arrogancy, they are not.”

Senator Mullis has issued two bills dealing with the issue.  One of those bills would mandate that public schools cannot play in a sports association that doesn’t have separate regions for public and private schools.
