On Wednesday, Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader took to social media to warn area residents about a scam.  It seems that the scammers have been calling area residents and telling them that they are from Georgia Power and demanding payment.

Sheriff Schrader said, “This number has tried to scam someone by saying they were Georgia Power and threatening to turn their power off….just so happened it was a NGEMC customer!”

The sheriff is asking people to be aware and to let elderly family members know that this is a scam.

Georgia Power states, “Georgia Power will never ask for a credit card or pre-paid debit card number over the phone. If a customer receives a suspicious call from someone claiming to be from Georgia Power and demanding payment to avoid disconnection, they should hang up and contact the company’s customer service line at 888-660-5890. “
