Summerville Middle School 8th grade Future Problem Solvers students presented their identified community issue and solution to the Summerville City Council on the Monday, February 14th session. As part of their community-based project for the Georgia Future Problem Solvers competition later this spring, students had to identify a community-based problem and work to solve it.

For these 8th graders, potholes were the top concern. Students presented their proposal to repair the potholes plaguing city streets and demonstrated their commitment to the project by discussing their ongoing school fundraiser.

The students have been selling, very successfully, popcorn to the student body each Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. Popcorn is considered a “smart snack” and is very popular among the middle schoolers. Their presentation was successful!

The City Council has agreed to partner with them to begin filling potholes. This group will return to the City Council in a two months time to present on their progress.
