The Georgia Department of Transportation wants motorists in Chattooga County to be aware that lanes are shifting slightly on U.S. Highway 27 at Taylor’s Ridge.

Last week, the DOT said that the signs that are posted are to make people aware, but that the lane shifts won’t have a huge impact on travel.  The lanes are being moved to allow workers to take soil samples in preparation for Phase II of the project.

Georgia DOT spokesman Joe Schulman told WZQZ News, “Phase I was an interim project to help stabilize the southern slope on Taylor’s Ridge located on SR 1/US 27 in Chattooga County just east of Summerville.  The project installed longitudinal roadway drainage and horizontal drains to help remove water from the soil.”

Schulman said, “Phase III will construct a wall on the southern slope and possibly the northern slope to stabilize the slopes.  Right now, the geotechnical work is underway to determine the number, type, and locations of the walls needed.”

The Georgia DOT says that they anticipate construction to begin in 2023.
