It’s been a busy week for local politics here in Chattooga County.  Two county board of education members announced that they would not be running in the upcoming election and several candidates have declared their intentions to run.  Qualifying for the three school board seats on this year’s ballots starts on Monday of next week.

Not all counties in Georgia have partisan elections for school board candidates, but here in Chattooga County, those seeking to be on the board must declare their intentions to run as a Republican or a Democrat.  Currently, there are three Republicans and two Democrats serving on the Chattooga County Board of Education.

The qualifying fee for those seeking school board seats is $39, as set by County Commissioner Blake Elsberry earlier this year.

Qualifying will continue until noon on Friday of next week.  Those seeking to run for the board of education are required to live in the district that they represent.  There are five school board districts in the county: Pennville, Summerville, Gore-Subligna, Lyerly and Menlo.
