The Summerville City Council will hold their regular monthly meeting for the month of March coming up tomorrow evening at 5 PM at Summerville City Hall.  One of the items on the agenda is the discussion of a proposed bridge widening project by the Georgia Department of Transportation on Highway 48.

Joe Schulman with the Georgia DOT told WZQZ News that the project is planned for this summer.  The state plans to build a new bridge over Racoon Creek on the Menlo Highway (Hwy 48).  According to the DOT, the bridge does not meet current standards.  The bridge was originally built in 1939.

The City of Summerville has utilities on that bridge, so that means that the utilities will  need to be rerouted during the construction.  Originally, the city was to pay 80% of the cost, but Summerville City Councilman Joe Money told WZQZ News that the city was able to negotiate that down to 70% of the cost, with the state department of transportation making up the other 30%.

In all, it is expected to cost the city $342,727 for the project.
