The City of Summerville is grappling with the decision on who will get a license to sell packaged liquor.   Currently, the city’s ordinance calls for a lottery system, but some council members are not happy with that idea.

At last week’s Summerville City Council meeting, several council members expressed their displeasure with the idea of a lottery system  Councilman Joe Money said that he fears that established, hometown, local businesses will be left out in favor of newer or out-of-town businesses that might apply for the license.

Mayor Harry Harvey said that he favors the current lottery system, but admits that it isn’t up to him to make the decision.  It is something that will have to be decided by the council.

Summerville Attorney Albert Palmour says that he needs more direction from the council in order to craft an ordinance if they choose to scrap the lottery method for awarding a liquor license.
