Taxpayers can breathe a very SLIGHT sigh of relief – as you DO have a BRIEF reprieve this year – from April 15th (this Friday) to April 18th (Next Monday) to file.

The usual deadline of the 15th falls on Emancipation Day this year, which is a holiday recognized by Washington D.C. – so the tax filing deadline is being pushed to the next business day – that being Monday, the 18th.  April 18th will also be the deadline to request an automatic extension for an extra six months to file a return.

What’s the average refund so far?

So far, the IRS has issued 51.77million refunds worth $171.14 billion.  The average refund is up $376 to $3,305 this year vs. $2,929 at the same point in 2021.  Most refunds are returned within 21 days though the IRS has warned of delays due to staffing shortages and on-going backlogs.
