It’s a problem across the United States.   Government jobs were once considered to offer job security and paid above the prevailing wage, but now local and county governments across the country are struggling to find enough workers to fill empty jobs.

Here in Georgia, there are thousands of jobs listed on the Georgia Department of Labor’s “Employ Georgia” web site.  Many of those jobs offer hourly wages that are a good bit higher than what local and county government jobs are offering.

The problem hasn’t escaped local governments here in Chattooga County.  Over the past few weeks, the City of Menlo, the Town of Trion and the City of Summerville have been advertising for various positions.  The county government is also looking for workers as well.

This week’s local paper had advertisements for a director for the county’s animal control department.  Also, the county is looking for dispatchers for E911.  Local municipalities are also running advertisements in the paper for workers.

Meanwhile, unemployment is at an all-time low, which means the struggle to find employees will likely continue for the foreseeable future.
