While Georgia residents are no longer required to get a carry permit to have a concealed weapon, the permits are still available.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp signed the “constitutional carry” bill into law recently and unlike most laws that go into place on either July 1st or January 1st, this law went into affect immediately. The law says that law abiding citizens in Georgia who are not convicted of a felony are able to carry a concealed weapon without any kind of permit.
But Chattooga County Probate Judge Gary Woods is reminding residents that a permit will still be needed if you plan to carry when you travel. Georgia is one of almost half the states in the union with “constitutional carry” laws, but when you cross the state line, there are different laws that apply.
In Georgia, you must be twenty-one-years of age before you can legally carry a concealed weapon, except for members of the military who are 18-20 years of age. Alabama’s constitutional carry has passed, but doesn’t go into place until January 1, 2023.
Concealed weapon permits are available at the Chattooga County Probate Court.
