Ice is coating roads in Mississippi and Alabama, causing school closures and several deadly accidents.

Trooper Brian Mobley of the Mississippi State Patrol confirmed to The Weather Channel and weather.com that there was one fatality as the result of a car accident near Prairie in north Mississippi.

Mobley also reported icy roads near Tupelo and Oxford, Miss.  "Almost every overpass or bridge is iced over in north Mississippi," he said.

So far, the ice is measuring less than a quarter of an inch, according to weather spotters.  However, it doesn’t take much ice to make roads treacherous.

"People drive over the bridges and don’t realized it’s ice until they’re on it," Mobley reported.

  A 44-year-old Corinth, Miss., man, Felipe Manguila, died Wednesday when the pickup he was driving flipped off U.S. Highway 72 in Alcorn County, Miss., the Associated Press said. Highway Patrol Trooper Ray Hall said the accident occurred about 6:30 a.m. after Manguila’s truck crossed an icy bridge.

 Hall said the truck hit a vehicle that had stopped to assist a driver from an earlier wreck at the spot. A passenger in the pickup was not injured.

In Alabama, a glazing of ice on a bridge resulted in an accident and two fatalities on U.S. highway 231 near Troy.

Some schools are closed in Mississippi.  Some schools in Alabama have announced their closing, including Huntsville, Muscle Shoals, and some in the Birmingham area.  Schools in Nashville, Tenn., have said they will have a half day, in anticipation of the wintry mix moving into Tennessee soon.
