The United Methodist Church’s Council of Bishops, ending a five-day meeting Friday, acknowledged the inevitable breakup of their denomination — a schism that will widen this weekend with the launch of a global movement led by theologically conservative Methodists.
The breakaway denomination will be known as the Global Methodist Church. Current United Methodist Churches will be provided a pathway to join the new, conservative Methodist church and still retain their property.
Today is the launch day for the Global Methodist Church. Some churches across the United States have already announced their intentions to disaffiliate with the United Methodist Church and will begin holding services today under the banner of the new Global Methodist Church.
Others, who will likely leave the denomination, are waiting until more questions are answered by the United Methodist Church’s 2024 General Conference.
