The landfill used by Chattooga County to dump waste has been fined for violations that date back to September of 2020.
The Sand Valley Landfill is located in Collinsville, Alabama and is operated by Republic Services. The landfill comprises 233 acres of land and accepts around 1,600 tons of waste per day.
In addition to a dozen counties in Alabama that bring wast to the site, Chattooga, Walker and Dade Counties in Georgia use the landfill – as does Hamilton County, Tennessee.
The violations listed in the order from Alabama officials, consist of failure to cover waste properly, failure to confine waste to a small area, failure to apply for a minor permit modification prior to construction, failure to maintain less than 30 cm of leachate on the liner, failure to maintain a run-on control system, and failure to control unauthorized discharges.
The parent company that operates the landfill has agreed to pay a civil penalty $33,600 and correct existing infractions.
