Georgia Governor Brian Kemp convinced the Georgia General Assembly to issue surplus refund checks to Georgia residents and signed the bill into law several weeks ago.  Since that time, checks have gone out to many Georgia taxpayers, but some people still haven’t received their portion of the $1.6 billion budget surplus.

To qualify, you need to be a full-year resident in Georgia in 2020 and 2021. You also needed to file state individual income taxes for both years, according to Georgia’s Dept. of Revenue. If you are not a full-year resident you may still qualify for some of the money – but not a full refund.

If you still have not received your refund, you should do the following:

  1. File your 2021 tax returns. If you are on an extension, you have until October.
  2. Check your tax liability
  3. Update your address with the state

The state says they expect all refunds to be issued by August of this year.
