The Summerville City Council has given no clear indication that they will take over the management of the Summerville Cemetery, but they have had discussions about the cemetery’s future.

At a meeting last week, Councilman Rickey Hughes proposed giving an extra $10,000 to the Summerville Cemetery Corporation – a non-profit organization that oversees the cemetery.  The Summerville Cemetery Corporation only has two remaining members and both members have said that they will be retiring some day and there is no one to take their place.

Mayor Harry Harvey resisted the move to give more money to the corporation saying “The city will probably be taking over it.”

Area residents have complained about conditions at the cemetery but the corporation that oversees it says there just isn’t enough money to provide the upkeep that the cemetery needs.
