The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is investigating three separate officer involved shootings over the past several days.   Officer involved shootings have taken place in Cobb, Gwinnett and Lowndes Counties.  You can see the GBI Press Releases on each incident below:

GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Gwinnett County

Lawrenceville, Georgia (June 11, 2022) – The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Lawrenceville, Georgia.  The Gwinnett County Police Department asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on June 10, 2022. James Edward Perkins, age 34, and one Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Deputy were shot. They are both being treated at Northside Hospital Gwinnett.

Preliminary information indicates at about 5:00 p.m., Gwinnett County Police Department officers and Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office deputies were attempting to locate a stolen SUV. Officers spotted the SUV at a Goodwill Thrift Store and Donation Center in Lawrenceville.  Officers successfully detained a female passenger but a male driver (Perkins) managed to get away in the stolen vehicle. A brief pursuit began and ultimately ended at Anzio Apartments, 3100 Sweetwater Road, Lawrenceville.  Perkins attempted to drive between a clubhouse and an apartment building where he encountered a steep drop-off and the SUV was effectively disabled.  As a deputy approached the SUV, Perkins shot the deputy several times. Other on-scene officers returned fire, hitting Perkins. Gwinnett County P.D. SWAT responded and ultimately placed Perkins in custody.  The deputy was taken to Northside Hospital Gwinnett where his injuries are said to be non-life-threatening.  Perkins was taken to Northside Gwinnett where he is reportedly in critical condition.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation.  Once complete the case file will be given to the Gwinnett District Attorney’s Office for review.

GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Cobb County

Mableton, GA (June 12, 2022) – The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Mableton, Cobb County, GA. The Cobb County Police Department (CCPD) asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on Saturday, June 11, 2022. One man was shot and is deceased. No officers were injured during the incident.

Preliminary information indicates that at 11:38 a.m., CCPD received a 911 call from a resident of 4683 Heritage Lakes Court, Mableton, Cobb County, GA. There was an armed man, later identified as Cesar Anthony Pena, age 41, of Mableton, shooting a firearm at family members in the hone. Officers responded and while there, heard gun shots inside the home. The SWAT team responded to the scene and at one point, Pena stepped outside onto the front porch with a shotgun. Two officers shot Pena and he was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once complete, it will be turned over to the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office for review.

GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Lowndes County

Valdosta, GA (June 14, 2022) – The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Valdosta, Lowndes County, GA. The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on Monday, June 13, 2022. One man was shot and is deceased. No officers were injured during the incident.

Preliminary information indicates that deputies were dispatched by 911 to a home on Ginger Trail because a man with a gun was threatening to hurt himself. When deputies arrived, they found the man behind the home with a handgun. During the incident, the man was shot and died at a local hospital. The man’s ID is pending.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once complete, it will be turned over to the Southern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
