Dr. Gary Voccio with the Northwest Georgia Health District says that his agency is keeping a close eye on COVID-19 variants which have led to a slight uptick in the number of people being hospitalized in the area for COVID related treatment.
Voccio says that hospital admissions in Northwest Georgia have doubled in recent weeks.
He says that COVID variants are highly contagious and urges area residents, especially those with weakened immune systems, to wear masks as well as look for well-ventilated areas in public settings.
The health department is also seeing several cases of flu – including some severe cases that have sent people to the hospital.
Since the start of the COVID pandemic, Georgia has seen 2 million COVID-19 cases and more than 32,000 deaths.
