On July 1st, the Summerville Police Department responded to a call about a possible scam. The responding officer met with the owner of a local business who said that one of his employees got a call at the business from someone claiming to be with the “Chattooga Police Department”.
The caller instructed the employee to give him her Venmo account number and then to go to a Dollar General store and purchase a money card. The employee gave the caller her information and purchased the money cards. However, the owner of the business met the employee at the dollar store and canceled the cards and called police. The responding officer told the employee to keep an eye on her bank account to make sure no fraudulent activity takes place.
Always remember that law enforcement agencies will never ask you to pay a fine over the phone to “avoid arrest”.
