This week, the Summerville City Council voted for an entertainment district in the city’s downtown area.  The measure will allow for public consumption of alcohol in a designated area that wills stretch from restaurants on Commerce Street to the city-managed Summerville Depot.

The idea is modeled after a similar district in downtown Rome.  A spokesperson from the Rome City Council spoke with Summerville council members earlier this year about their entertainment district and said that they have had very few problems since adopting the measure.

The vote by the Summerville City Council was 4-1, with councilman Joe Money opposing the measure.

Councilman Money spoke with WZQZ News and explained his reasons for voting against the entertainment district.  Councilman Money said, “The citizens that contacted me were not in favor of it and I didn’t think it was a good idea for booze to go in and out of Depot un-patrolled especially since it’s a government building.”

The measure was adopted at the council’s monthly meeting that was held on Monday of this week.
