On Friday, the Army Corps of Engineers approved a permit application submitted by Resource Environmental Services for permission to being the cleaning process of Town Creek that flows from Willow Spring Park through downtown Summerville.
The project is one that was of great importance to City Councilman Joe Money after flooding affected several downtown businesses and residences in 2021. Councilman Money called together state and local officials for a round-table discussion about the problem. As a result of those meetings the Georgia Department of Transportation surveyed the downtown area and made recommendations to correct the flooding issues.
Councilman Money said on Friday, “Eleven culverts have been identified as problem areas that are contributing to flooding issues within the city. A BIG THANK You to Chattooga Emergency Management , City of Summerville Public Works, Georgia Department of Transportation, Georgia Municipal Association, and Army Corp of Engineers for the help provided to attain this permit.”
Work to clean Town Creek is scheduled to begin this week.
