While the Chattooga County Board of Education voted to roll back the millage rate, their counterparts in neighboring Walker County have voted to raise the millage rate on property owners.

WQCH in LaFayette reports:

The Walker County School System is proposing a property tax increase of 16.6 percent on bills payable this December. If approved by the school board on August 15th, the millage rate will be set at 16.404 mills.

On a home with a fair market value of $225,000 and a homestead exemption, that increase would amount to $202. It’s the fifth year in a row that the school system has raised taxes.

With this year’s increase, Walker County tax payers will raise 27.3-million dollars for school operations… up nearly 4-million from last year’s levy. The remainder of the budget comes from State and Federal sources.

Three public hearings on the increase will be held concerning the proposed millage rate increase.
