Flooding behind the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office on Sunday morning

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp is scheduled to be in Chattooga County today to tour the flood ravaged area and talk about assistance for the county as the community still struggles with the aftermath of the Labor Day weekend flood.

The Governor and First Lady Marty Kemp, along with Georgia Emergency Management Agency Director Chris Stallings will be given a tour by Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader and other local officials.

The governor declared a State of Emergency on Sunday for Chattooga County and portions of Floyd County that saw over 14 inches of rain in an eight-hour period.

Georgia law defines a “state of emergency” as a “condition declared by the Governor when, in his judgment, the threat or actual occurrence of a disaster, emergency, or energy emergency in any part of the state is of sufficient severity and magnitude to warrant extraordinary assistance by the state to supplement the efforts and available resources of the several localities and relief organizations in preventing or alleviating the damage, loss, hardship, or suffering threatened or caused thereby.” O.C.G.A. § 38-3-3(7).
