A social media threat received by a student at Chattooga High School lead to a “soft lockdown” at the school on Thursday.

After being made aware of the threat, Chattooga High School Principal Dr. Emily Mobbs said, “the (Chattooga County) Sheriff’s office is taking over the investigation and everyone is safe.”  Principal Mobbs said that operations at the high school went on as usual, but encouraged anyone with any knowledge of the threat to contact the high school or the sheriff’s office.

Later on Thursday afternoon, Dr. Mobbs said that no immediate threat had been found and she cautioned students about the use of social media.

Late Thursday afternoon, Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader released the following statement:

Chief Investigator Jason Burrage of the Sheriffs Office has identified the person responsible for the Snapchat threat which placed the High School on soft lockdown this morning. Chief Inv. Burrage, working closely with school officials, was able to track down the threat to a juvenile which is not a student at CHS. The juvenile is being charged with Terroristic threats and disruption of public school.

Chattooga County School Supt. Jared Hosmer told WZQZ News on Thursday, “Chattooga High School spent the day on soft lockdown while school administrators and the Sheriff’s department investigated a SnapChat threat that was reported this morning to the SRO by a high school student. Quick work by the Sherriff’s department and school officials lead to the juvenile suspect responsible for the threat. I want to thank the Sherrif’s Department and our school SROs for their quick response and hard work to keep our school family safe.”
